The girls and I have been reading lots of STEM related books lately (check out Our 10 Favorite STEM + Schoolhouse Books) and were totally inspired to do this simple little science experiment. We originally found this fun idea from our friends over at Sandbox Academy, and it is still one of the girls’ favorites.
What you need:
– Ice Trays (HERE) or any set of cups that you have around the house
– Baking Soda (HERE)
– Vinegar (HERE)
– Food Coloring (HERE)
– Droppers (HERE)
What to do:
- Fill each ice cube well (or cup) with a couple drops of food coloring.
- Scoop a teaspoon of baking soda over each of those drops.
- Let your kiddo suck up vinegar into their droppers, and pour into each well to reveal the color in a bubbly explosion.
PRO TIP: I love to add primary color drops of food coloring together, so that the explosion transforms to a new color as it reacts together.
I got an endless amount of OOOHHHHS and AHHHHHs from this little science experiement. The girls have asked to do it again and again. The best part, is you likely already have everything you need in your house. Don’t have the droppers? Use a medicine dropper that you already have in cabinet. Works just as well!
Have memory making, little scientists!
